Can't speak Chinese? No worries.

Yesterday was a brand new innovation for Google Talk.

QUOTE

But I know a bot that does, and we're releasing it today together with number of other translation bots. For those not familiar with bots, a (ro)bot is a piece of software that acts as a chat contact and provides some fun or useful functionality.

If you want to try it, just add en2zh@bot.talk.google.com as a friend in Google Talk and send it a message to translate from English to Chinese. You can use it as an interpreter in your group chat, or as a pocket translator in your Google Talk client for BlackBerry.

For now, it only works in the Google Gadget - we hope group chats will be implemented too soon but from the previous leaked update, this seems dubious.

Chinese isn't the only language available. Taken from the blog post, the following 23 languages are also supported, although as you may expect aren't perfect:

QUOTE

ar2en, de2en, de2fr, el2en, en2ar, en2de, en2el, en2es, en2fr, en2it, en2ja, en2ko, en2nl, en2ru, en2zh, es2en, fr2de, fr2en, it2en, ja2en, ko2en, nl2en, ru2en, zh2en

The Google Talk Team are encouraging you to build your own bot if you're a programmer.

For more information and source:
http://googletalk.blogspot.com/2007/12/mer...od-jul-and.html

What the? New Talk version removes several features.

We've been waiting a long time for a new version of google talk; and now it's come I can't say I'm not dissapointed.

So what's changed?
- Voicemail has GONE. No more voicemail. Who knows why?
- "What I'm Listening To" has GONE. Great feature, no more.
- Orkut integration has also GONE. I never used it, but I'm sure many of you did.

David Hetfield (Google Blogoscoped Forums) noticed these minor updates:
- Now, when you click the green phone icon, it opens a new window, and initiate a call.
- After you’ve closed a chat window, and got back to it, the history will get a gray color.
- After you hover a contact, you no longer get options for this contact, just a window showing the contact’s name, status, and email.

So what HASN'T changed?
- Still no multi-chat. The flash version of Talk got this a while ago, why still not the Client Google?
- Still no youtube integration. Same as above.
- Still no AIM integration. Only available in GMail chat. This was promised 2 years ago!

We're not sure why this has happened or what will be in the version after next, but we think this was a big mistake - one of the first that Google have made in the life of Talk.

Note this release is not available from the google website as of yet, you can find it here:
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Chat...ogle-Talk.shtml
There's a slight possibility that it may change before the official release, let's just hope so.

Google + AIM are finally lovers

Almost 2 years, give or take 2 weeks, GMail users are now able to chat with AIM users through google talk.
Original press release of the deal between google & AOL:
http://www.google.com/intl/en/press/pressr...l_expanded.html

So, here's what you do to get chatting with AIM users:

Just click on the upside-down triangle next to "set status here" in your Gmail chat and select "Sign into AIM" from the drop down menu. Once you've entered your AIM log-in information, your AIM contacts will appear intermingled among your Gmail contacts, and you can select an AIM contact and chat with them directly.

For now it's just for the GMail client, and is unclear whether or not this will port over to the Google Talk desktop client - there has been a long gap between releases so far - we're still waiting on a Group Chat client with emoticons & more.

Google buys GrandCentral voice communications company

Google Announced recently that they purchased GrandCentral, a company specialising in voicemail & call forwarding.

This could open a window to forward calls directly to Google Talk for convenience. It may even speed up the inevitable forfthcoming PC2Phone features.

A sign of the future?

http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2007/07/all-aboard.html

GROUP CHAT in Google Talk Gadget!

A feature many of us have been waiting for since day one, although unfortunately only availbale on the flash Google Talk Gadget.

Group Chat! Now more than 2 people can talk to each other within the same conversation window.

Currently if you try to add somebody who is not using the google talk gadget, they are instead sent a hyperlink to the web app where they can join the chat.

Hopefully Multi-User chat will be implemented in the next version of the Google Talk client.

(Talk Gadget via ZDnet)

AIM & Multi-User chat finally coming to google talk?

http://mpwebwizard.com/blog/gmail_trans

Martin (above) is listed as a xx-hacker translator on google.

Luckily for us he is able to view hints at upcoming google features - a couple of which hint at AIM and Multi-User Chat integration with google talk.

Derived from the phrase needed to be translated - "NAME has joined"

QUOTE

Multi-user conversations, finally

This suggests that we will have multi-user conversations in the Google chat functionality of Gmail, seeing as this isn't in the Google talk client yet, we can expect that this feature is being worked on.

And "NAME has been removed from your buddy list" -

QUOTE

We actually might see some AIM integration

Seems that the IM interoperability promised with the $1 Billion dollar deal Google struck with Time Warner might actual yield something after 17 months.

Lets keep our eyes open for these new features supposedly coming very soon!

This makes it possible to navigate away from the Google Homepage but still have the Gadget open.

The second is the introduction of yahoo-run Flickr photo streams - just paste a flickr URL and the slideshow of the pictures will display.
